Reading does not seem like a difficult skill to master, but in reality, learning to read is a complex neurological task. One must be able to split a word into meaningful syllables in addition to understanding the sound represented by each of the letters or letter combinations in the word. The programmes are built on the assumption that learning to read and spell involves a thorough comprehension of the English language's core sounds (phonemes). Phonics is the name given to this field of knowledge, and research shows that about a third of all kids needed special education in this area in order to learn to read fluently and spell correctly. At a young age, children are frequently enthralled by reading. Because reading is so important for future success in all courses, NRICH teaches pupils to read using phonics. Kids learn how letter sounds combine to make words using phonics. Every new letter is used to teach him to read new words wherever they go. Without guessing, our children employ phonics ideas to sound out words. As a result, our students are more confident in their reading abilities and are ready to take on new challenges.
The capacity to recognise and apply math principles in many aspects of life is known as numeracy. Understanding numbers, counting, solving number problems, measuring, estimating, sorting, finding patterns, adding and subtracting numbers, and so on are all examples of numeracy skills. To assist kids recall numbers and geometric forms, we use various activities. Students learn to count forwards and backwards as well as recognise the value of different numbers. By linking quantity to what they see or touch, we teach them to understand the concept of quantity—that numbers signify how many or how much of something. They practise math by solving addition and subtraction questions based on everyday objects.
Our Grade 2 students become skilful at skip counting, simple measurements, basic addition and subtraction. They know how to find place values for numbers up to 1000. They understand and recognise whole numbers up to 10,000 and are already capable of doing multiplications and division. They are getting proficient on basic word problems and can also describe 2D shapes and patterns.
Second-graders present their topic and present facts, definitions, or actions to help them develop their argument. Children improve their writing skills in second grade by learning to consider their audience and purpose, as well as categorising and structuring their thoughts.
Language arts students in second grade will improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They'll keep working on comprehending the relationship between sounds, letters, and words. By writing to express ideas and information, second graders learn word use and comprehension. Nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and complex sentences are all covered in second-grade language arts. Students learn how to recognise these specific grammatical elements as well as when and how to utilise them to make their communication clearer.
For children, learning to read opens a world of possibilities. It increases their ability to think creatively and critically, broadens their knowledge base, and improves their ability to respond to others with understanding and compassion. At NRICH Learning, we follow the Blooms taxonomy for teaching comprehension skills. The passages are provided with the appropriate level of complexity and a wide genre. Grade 2 comprehension passages include poems, Aesop's fables and other stories, both fiction and non-fiction.
After having learnt the basic calculations and numbers, the Grade 3 child starts with even and odd numbers, measurement of lengths, probability and chance and many other new concepts. The complexity of word problems now includes mixed operations. From multiplications and division, they dive into the world of fractions and decimals. Geometry is introduced and they start to play with angles, space, maps and networks. Data representation in charts and graphs is also introduced.
Third grades are challenged to write creative essays. Helpful clues are provided to assist them with ideas. NRICH pupils comprehend the structure of a paragraph by third grade and can construct multi-paragraph essays. They practice writing in free verse and learning to edit and rewrite their work to polish and refine it.
Besides refreshing and enhancing the previous read grammar topics, the students are taught prepositions, contractions, prefixes, and suffixes. Students in third grade learn to recognise and understand elements of speech such as adjectives, adverbs, articles, conjunctions, and interjections, as well as their varied purposes in sentences. To increase writing precision and reading comprehension, they also master capitalisation and spelling norms.
Grade 3 comprehension builds on from the previous year learning and introduces complex vocabulary and spellings. The use of phrases and idioms in the language helps learn grammar topics whilst building on comprehension skills. We use poems, fiction, narratives, games, and a wide variety of topics which not only helps the young reader in their language skills but increases their general awareness.
The Grade 4 student is ready to learn shapes and symmetry and concepts such as volume, capacity, area, and mass. Algebra is also taught in grade 4. The complexity of the basic arithmetic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division increases and due to this scaffolding, the child gains confidence in the subject matter.
The Fourth-grade child will benefit from the writing skills we teach them for the rest of their lives. The children are encouraged to take up reading and make use of technology. The teachers demonstrate how to create an outline. The children enjoy expressing themselves via writing! This year, kids will compose expository, argumentative, and descriptive multi-paragraph essays to strengthen and enhance their writing skills. Teachers are also starting to teach kids how to use and reference sources.
Synonyms and antonyms, punctuation and capitalisation, positive and negative connotations, compound words and homophones form the curriculum of grade 4 language arts. We connect grammar and mechanics with writing because rules exist to help us express information in a clear and structured manner. Fourth graders can identify and diagram prepositional phrases, independent clauses, and relative pronouns, as well as employ apostrophes and hyphens.
The comprehension skills challenge the reader to understand the more profound meaning and evaluate the author’s purpose, find synonyms and antonyms in the text. The reader is also asked to present alternative scenarios and be creative to suggest different conclusions to the text.
Some students in grade 5 start preparing for scholarship places offered by some reputed private schools. This requires a high degree of understanding and application of arithmetic, algebra, shapes, measurements etc. In the grade 5 curriculum the fractional operations, transformation of shapes, quantifying chance as a fraction, financial plans and budgets are taught besides a repetition of the complex word problems with mixed operations.
In increasingly complex, multi-paragraph essays, fifth-grade students develop and build on previously taught knowledge and skills. Fifth-grade essays have formal introductions, a lot of supporting material, and a conclusion. Students practise writing strategies and try out several types of essay leads (e.g., an astonishing fact, a dramatic scene). In 5th grade, many new and exciting concepts are learned and mastered. Nrich pupils know how to employ the components of speech successfully in their works by the fifth grade. They learn to incorporate their own voices into their writing and to select the proper tone and style for their audience and purpose.
Analogies, figurative language, similes, and metaphors, finding synonyms and antonyms in context form the curriculum of grade 5 language arts. Fifth graders continue to gain a better knowledge of how the English language works. They conjugate verbs, draw participles, correctly identify prefixes, suffixes, and roots of words, and deduce the meanings of unknown words based on context.
The grade 5 students are challenged to choose different phrases in the context of the text. They are asked to write the text summary and infer from a particular portion of the passage to analyse the text deeply.
Different types of numbers such as prime, composite, negative and square triangular are introduced alongside ratios and proportions. The students are taught how to compare different data representations. In algebra the students begin to form generalisations and patterns. On the money matters they become experts at calculating percentages and concepts of profit and loss. They understand the connection between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
As they compose reports and presentations, sixth graders gain a better comprehension of research abilities. They also practise several genres and types of writing, such as narration, sonnet, and sestina, to improve their writing skills. Students should carefully arrange their work and compose with finesse! Sixth graders develop a greater understanding of research abilities as they write reports and presentations. To strengthen their writing skills, they also practise a variety of genres and forms of writing, including narration, sonnet, and sestina. Students should organise their work meticulously and compose with flair!
Active and passive voice, literary devices such as personification and hyperbole, finding the author’s purpose and tone are covered in grade 6 besides refreshing and introducing complex grammar topics. Students in sixth grade become proficient at diagramming complex grammatical constructions. They can recognise and employ appositives and pronoun antecedents correctly, edit and repair mechanics errors, and adequately distinguish between active and passive voice. Both reading comprehension and writing effectiveness are aided by these abilities.
The complexity of the passage and vocabulary used goes up and ensures that we build the vocabulary of the child. The comprehension topics vary from a movie review to current affairs and general science. The students are exposed to a variety of writing styles and the work of well-known authors.
The grade 7 students become competent at surveys and displaying data in charts and graphs. The students can represent numbers on a number line. The students understand the concepts of coordinates and transformation of shapes. The key topics taught are equations, ratios and proportions(advanced), statistical data representation, time and money etc.
Students in seventh grade are required to write error-free essays that are clear, cohesive, and focused. Students in seventh grade can choose and employ many types of writing for specific reasons, such as informing, persuading, or entertaining others. Students use a variety of sentence structures and verb tenses, including present, past, future, perfect, and progressive, in a consistent and appropriate manner. Our seventh graders writing abilities vastly outstrip those of their peers. They enjoy trying their hand at research writing, rhetoric since they have been taught how to write in a rigorous and logical manner.
The topics of year seven comprehension range from current affairs, biography of famous people, general science, fiction pieces, historical events and much more. The complexity of the text and use of literary devices is according to the grade level and helps the student to comprehend and improve on their compositions and writing styles. Text from well-known writers and authors are also included to give the student an experience of both contemporary and modern styles of writing.

From linear equations and basic algebraic expressions, the student is now ready to learn quadratic equations, Pythagoras theorem, linear relations, and coordinate geometry. Graphs of linear equations, trigonometry and its application, trigonometric ratios, similarity, and congruency of shapes are all taught in grade 9. The students also practice further algebra and graphs of non-linear equations.
As children advance through high school, specialised language becomes increasingly crucial. We encourage the youngster to read as much as he or she can. Ascertain that they are keeping up with their required reading and that they have adequate free time to read for pleasure. We challenge your high schooler to unearth the stories of family, neighbours, or acquaintances and turn them into a historical project. We encourage your youngster to read biographies of well-known inventors, scientists, and computer gurus, such as Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein.
The student is taught to identify the genre of the text, the theme of the passage, the author’s purpose, the main idea etc. The usage of figurative language and rhetoric, and literary devices in the passages gives the student a much-needed exercise to understand the use of these devices and improve their own writing.
