Information about the examination

The SEHS entrance exam tests ability rather than achievement and focuses on higher-order thinking skills.

The required knowledge in any section will not exceed that found in the Year 8 curriculum.

In 2023, the SEHS entrance exam will include the following:

Reasoning in Reading, Mathematics
General Ability – Verbal, Quantitative, and Writing

It will contain multiple-choice questions and written tasks.

Further information about the exam will be available as part of the information pack, published in early 2023.

State schools provided for academically high-achieving students in year
9 to 12.

How Do We Help?

NRICH Learning conducts specialized classes for students preparing for Victorian Selective School Exams. We provide extensive exposure to the students on exam-style questions and prepare them to appear in these exams confidently.

The Victorian Government conducts a centralized examination for entry into years 9 and 10 for the above schools.

The exams are categorized as follows:

1. Ability Test

There are two ability tests, Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning.

Verbal Reasoning

This is a multiple-choice test that measures the ability to think and reason using words and language. Items in the test tap into vocabulary, word relationships, classification and deduction. There are 60 questions in the test and the time allowed is 30 minutes.

Numerical Reasoning

This is a multiple-choice test that measures the ability to think and reason using numbers. Items in the test tap into series, matrices, arithmetical reasoning and deduction. There are 50 questions in the test and the time allowed is 30 minutes.

2. Achievement Tests

There are three achievement tests, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Writing Expression.

Reading Comprehension

This is a multiple-choice test that measures the capacity to read and interpret meaning from written passages. Some questions also require students to correct, complete and punctuate sentences. There are 50 questions in the test and the time allowed is 30 minutes.

Mathematics

This is a multiple-choice test that measures year-level appropriate mathematical knowledge. Questions include measurements, algebra, space and data. There are 60 questions in the test and the time allowed is 30 minutes.

Writing Expression

Students complete one written expression test. Students may be asked to produce any of the following text types – creative or persuasive.

Creative Writing

This test asks students to write an original work in response to visual or written cues. It measures the student’s ability to convey ideas in written form. The test assesses punctuation, content, creativity, construction, paragraphs, spelling and relevance.

The student is given 5 minutes to plan and 30 minutes to write the essay.

Persuasive Writing

This test asks students to respond to an issue that is relevant to society. For example, social,
environmental or political issues. It measures the student’s ability to take a stance on the
issue, make a logical and cohesive argument, and persuade an audience.

The test assesses persuasive devices and language, punctuation, structure, grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

The student is given 5 minutes to plan and 30 minutes to write the essay.

We have bundled the sample exams, which the students can use to practice. These are online exams that the student can write on his/her own time. The student/parent could enroll and pay for these exams through or simple self-service portal. These are offered at a very reasonable price and are a good value for money.
